I have been told by Wing Commander B Jayaprakash, who himself blogs a lot about the Badaga community and their customs, that the above information is incorrect and that the Badagas are actually one of the original and native tribes of the Nilgiris.
The Badagas speak a language called ‘Badaga’, which is primarily a dialect of Kannada spoken in a heavy Tamil accent. This is the language that they use to communicate with other Badagas, but they are equally adept at speaking Tamil too and hence you might confuse them to be native Tamil people.
I have been told by Wing Commander B Jayaprakash, who himself blogs a lot about the Badaga community and their customs, that the above information is incorrect and that the Badagas are highly educated and spread across the globe and are not confined to tea estates alone.
P.S. All of the information written above have come out of conversations I have had with various people from the Badaga Community in Kotagiri, Coonoor and Red Hills.
Most of the information you have given about Badagas is wrong and misleading. The origin of Badagas - that they have 'fled' from Mysore is not correct. Please see http://badaga.in and other websites/blogs linked. Badagas are one of the original and 'native' tribes of the Nilgiris and are highly educated and spread across the globe and not confined to the tea estates.
ReplyDeleteKindly do not generalise that you have gathered the info from the Badagas you have spoken to.

ReplyDeleteI am so sure myself and hence will take any opinion provided by the experts, if they come forward.
ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing the link. I agree with you that the Badagas have no mention in the roots of the Nilgiris and hence am confused. But, I do not want to offend anybody. I am not the expert as I said earlier and hence would appreciate if any expert came forward and shared the true history and story with us.
