During the monsoons, it looks like the entire world around us seems to have worn a fresh green blanket. And when I visited Emerald Lake, it was no different.
Emerald Lake is one of the eight lakes that make up the lake ecosystem of Red Hills, located in the Nilgiri Mountains. This lake ecosystem is about 20 odd kilometres from the bustling hill town of Ooty in Tamil Nadu.
Personally, I have always been fascinated by the Emerald Lake out of all the eight lakes. A close second would be the Avalanche Lake. The reason being, the Emerald lake glitters and glimmers like an emerald on a bright sunny day.
I have visited this entire belt multiple times before, but this was my first visit in the monsoons. And the grey skies did not allow me to view the emerald beauty. But instead, I saw sheets of fresh green covered by mist and grey skies.
The surprising part about this visit was that the lake had hardly any water in spite of us being right in the middle of the Indian monsoons. During my previous visits, I have always seen water at levels much higher than where it lies today.
Guess global warming, deforestation and climate change are playing havoc in the Nilgiri Biosphere. I hope that this area receives more rainfall and the lakes reach to their full potential soon.

ReplyDeleteI don't particularly like this place, but have to admit it looks lush in the monsoon months.
ReplyDeleteArun, Just curious...any particular reason for not liking this place. If you don't want to answer, I would understand.
ReplyDeleteWhatever happened to such a thing called natural vegetation!?
ReplyDeleteThat I totally agree with you. People cut the local forests to grow their cash crops, which destroys the true beauty.
