Situated on the shores of the east coast of India, this is the only temple in a land of churches, colonial buildings and collector bungalows.
This is the Masilamani Nathar Temple, a 13th century structure that dates back to the Pandian era. Today, only its ruins stand, ravaged by the vagaries of time and the increasing sea levels. Though, one can still admire the rich South Indian temple architecture on the temple dome and main door.
This temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva. It is situated right in front of the British Collector’s bungalow that is today known as the ‘Bungalow on the Beach’ hotel property.
The question that plagued me after visiting this place is why is this the only temple here and uncared for when the entire temple dynasty of Chidambaram and Kumbakonam is not even an hour’s drive away and appeals to lots of people even today.
