Life in the Tidal Pools

It is an interesting experience to walk through the tidal pools of the world, but do exercise caution as these tidal pools house a great number of living creatures and organisms and you don’t want to kill them by mistake.

In this instance, I was walking through the tidal pools surrounded by mangrove forests in Havelock Island in the Andamans. It was low tide time and a lot of interesting organisms seemed to be making good use of these six hours.

The mudskippers seemed to be sunbathing after finishing their meal of plankton, algae and insects, while the hermit crabs seemed to be having a field day. They could be seen everywhere.

Even though the ground was soggy, I had to watch out for the fear of stamping these vibrant looking hermit crabs. Traditional crabs could also be seen, though in dark corners and under rocky surfaces.

Other life was also seen in the tidal pool, though am not able to identify them. It is really a surreal experience to walk through the tidal pools of the mangrove forests and play hide and seek with the tidal pool living beings.

  1. Lovely photos!! The roots of those trees are beautiful! The hermit crabs & mudskippers are too cute. :)

I plan to feature a few species that i found in tidal pools along the Bahian coast in Brazil, in the coming weeks - nothing like the quality shots you captured, though.

    Great post!

  2. Thank you Amaris for your kind words.

You should definitely feature the species that you found in the tidal pools. I just looked up your blog a while back and it looks like the Bahia coast is a sensational place to explore. I would really love to see more photos from there.
