Submarine Museum of Vishakhapatnam – One of its kind in the Asian Continent!!
This place is one of its kind in the Asian continent and the second one in the whole world. I am referring to the Submarine Museum, ‘Smritika’, situated by the Ramakrishna Beach in Vishakhapatnam.
This museum, located between the marine drive and the calm Ramakrishna Beach, started functioning in 2001. It was converted from INS Kurusura, a Russian built submarine.
I was at this place a couple of weeks back. Unfortunately for me, it was a Monday and the Museum was closed. But, fortunately for me, I could get a good view of the submarine from the perimeter itself.
This submarine served for about 31 years before it was decommissioned and retired from nation’s defence services. From the perimeter, I got a great view of the submarine, a couple of torpedoes and an indicator buoy.
The entire setting of this museum is great. I loved the sight of the Bay of Bengal and the submarine in the same view. This museum is also an important landmark in Vizag.
