As most of you would know, Lingaraj Temple, situated at Bhubaneshwar in Orissa is a revered pilgrimage centre.
Bindu Sagar is the religious tank or pond just outside the temple campus. It is believed that the waters of this religious tank washes away one’s sins.
Both Lingaraj Temple and Bindu Sagar were built during the rule of the Kalinga dynasty and are considered a jewel in Indian Temples and architecture as they are the finest example of Kalinga architecture.
I have been to the Lingaraj temple a couple of times years back, but had never visited Bindu Sagar before. Hence, this time when I was at Bhubaneshwar, I decided to give Lingaraj temple a miss and pay a visit to the temple pond and its surrounding temples.
It was a cloudy morning when I landed at Bindu Sagar. I could see the top half of the Lingaraj temple from this temple tank. I hoped that the weather would get better and allow to take some long distance photographs, but unfortunately, I had to be content with the short range.
There were temples by the other side of Bindu Sagar that were also built in the Kalinga architecture style. But, unlike the Lingaraj temple, these small temples have been abandoned. A great visit as this gave me a different perspective of Lingaraj temple.

Oh nice... Lovely post!! I do with to travel to Orissa some day..
ReplyDeleteThe tank seems to be quite large. I missed it. Photography inside the Lingaraj temple is probably not allowed. The small temples, since abandoned, are possibly votive shrines. Thanks.
ReplyDeleteYes, Bindu Sagar is decently large. It seems that there have been change in rules at Lingaraj temple and they allow photography inside the temple complex, though taking pictures of the main shrine is still prohibited.
ReplyDelete:-D. Well, you should then! The best season is fast approaching.
