Last month, I was at Daulatabad Fort for a photo shoot session. Though I did not get a chance to go into the fort and explore it at depth, I managed to explore its perimeter in the time that was available to me.
To all those who don’t know, Daulatabad fort is a 12th century structure situated about 15 kilometres from the city of Aurangabad in Maharashtra, India.
It was built in the 12th century by the Yadava King of Bhillima V and was called Devgiri then. Then, it was acquired by Alauddin Khilji who made it a Mughal stronghold.
Sometime in the early 14th century, Sultan Mohammed-bin-Tughlak, moved his capital from Delhi to Devgiri and renamed this fort city as Daulatabad’ or the city of fortune/prosperity.
This fort city prides itself on its virtually impregnable defence system that consist of multiple layers of massive walls, complex arrangement of entryways and deep rock-cut moats and trenches. From the outside, one can see the 70 metre high Chand Minar that stands tall amidst the rock cut structures.
