A Meander through Kavaratti Island
As one approaches Kavaratti, one can just see white stretches of sand followed by dense coconut trees.
But, as one takes a tour of this island town, they figure out that there is so much more than that meets the eye.
The beaches and the surrounding lagoon waters promise a great relaxing experience bundled with a lot of water sport opportunities like scuba diving, snorkelling, kayaking and kite surfing.
The thing that truly stands out about Kavaratti is the sheer density of coconut trees packed in this tiny island. No wonder, Lakshadweep is the largest producer of coconut in India.
The marine aquarium and museum is definitely an educational experience.
Though one can hardly see any tourist infrastructure like restaurants and eating joints, one can spot a lot of madrasa(s) – Muslim educational institutions. At lunch hour, the exits of such madrasa(s) are bustling with activity and kids.
Kavaratti also has the world’s first ever low temperature desalination plant that is situated in the rocky side of the island. It is very heartening to know that the government has built and promoted the desalination plant in spite of the island having abundant fresh ground water.
