A Leisurely Walk at Kalpeni Island

The first half of the morning was spent in and on the waters of the Kalpeni Lagoon doing kayaking, snorkelling and swimming.


After lunch, it was time for a tropical siesta, followed by a cup of hot tea and some rare sea shells after that.

 
During the entire day, we had never gotten time to explore the island and hence decided to walk to the other end of the island where our boat was waiting for us.


The island in layman terms is a coconut paradise. The life of the locals revolves round these coconut trees. It is no wonder that Lakshadweep is India’s largest producer of coconuts.

 
In the morning, while I had crossed this stretch on jeep, I had noticed water everywhere. But, now, late in the afternoon, it was low tide time and hence all the water had receded to leave behind a marshy grassland. I could find egrets and herons trying to make best use of the fishes trapped during the low tide.

 
During the walk, I realized how sparsely populated this island was. Houses were few and far between. The rest of the walk was just a coconut maze. Soon, it was time for me to leave Kalpeni and I was happy to have at least attempted to explore the island even though for a short while.
