Picture book tea town of Munnar!
An event of days gone by...last December during my solo all india motorcycle journey...
Munnar is a picture book tea town located in the south western ghats in Kerala's Idukki district. In yesteryears a sleepy tea plantation town, Munnar, today is a bustling tourist destination and is growing faster than its supporting ecology.
After visiting the Eravikulam National Park, I decided to tour this idyllic tourist destination - Munnar in god's own country and visit some of its famous tourist spots. My first stop was "Top Station", which is the highest point on the Munnar-Kodaikanal road and is situated at an altitude of 1,700 meters above sea level. Top Station is about 32 kms from Munnar and the climb up is dotted with tea plantations. It is said that the views presented here are mind-blowing, but thanks to a misty environment, all I could see was 5 feet in front of me. The rare Neela Kurunji shrub and flower is a native of this place.
The next stop was the Echo point, a place with a scenic view and that offers the natural echo phenomenon. Echo point is about 15 kms from Munnar on the Munnar - Top Station road.
Next, I made my way to the pretty little town of Kundala with its artificial Kundala dam. This place offers a relaxed outing with a decent boating experience.
My next spot was the Mattupetty dam. This place gets its name from the highly specialized dairy farm that exists here.
I also visited Devikulam and Pallivasal. These places offered great views of the hills and the velvety tea gardens offered a great family picnic spot.
Overall, a picture perfect setting - Munnar in God's Own Country - Kerala!!
